You're right that the Superbowl metric is a bit unfair. In fact, Terrell Davis is the very example I use when disagreeing with those who rank Elway ahead of Marino. Nor would I put Roethlisberger ahead of Marino because he's got 2 Superbowl wins. So that's why I put in yardage at the end, though it wasn't the main thrust of my argument.

It would probably instructive to analyse the play of these QB's within their Superbowl appearances so as to mitigate against a bad defensive performace. Perhaps another day.

But because QB's get both too much or too little credit for titles in such a team-oriented sport, I'm ultimately ok with using it as a significant barometer in determining a QB's legacy, and thus a QB draft class' legacy. (2004 > 1983, Montana > Marino).

Only 3 or 4 teams in the past 30 years have won a Superbowl without an elite-level QB. Those Redskins teams were one example and remember that Phil Simms was considered elite level. So if you don't have ridiculous stats like Marino did, you need a Superbowl or two.

Now I may be on dangerous grounds disagreeing with you on sports...but methinks the Super Bowl record isn't a fair metric. Football, more than a lot of other sports (although futbol is similar), is truly a team game. Individuals can't dominate as much as they can in, say, hockey or basketball. Sure they played on "fine teams." But there's a difference between a "fine team" and one good enough to win a Super Bowl.

Other than Super Bowl XXV, it seems pretty clear that the Bills' other opponents were much better than them. And if that infamous field goal against the Giants was just a few inches to the right, we would be having a different conversation right now.

And the same thing with Elway. Until the last two years when he had Terrell Davis et al., I don't see how the Broncos were in the same league as the either the Redskins or the Giants (getting crushed by both).

I distinctly remember when I first came to this country (1993), there were semi-serious talks of having the Super Bowl between two NFC teams because the AFC was just terrible. No superstar quarterback can compensate for that.

Now I'm not saying you're necessarily wrong. The 2004 class may end up being better. I just think the Super Bowl metric isn't the best one to use here.

It's not terribly uncommon for players to switch positions at the behest of their coach. It's usually within a contiumm, of course - RB, WR, LB, DB, QB... the most athletic positions, so to speak. But at PSU, the elite players always seem to have been funneled to LB.

I think the best team sport can be assessed on the international level. Best athletes don't always mean the best team. It's usually the team that can combine their best players into 1 chemistry building machine. i.e. Argentina, England in futbol, USA in basketball.
