London – Punk

I think there´s more of a punk sensibility here in London than back in the States.  Not that Pgh isn´t devoid of alterna-life but I think you´re more likely to see it out on the streets here.

I´ve seen numerous people in sober looking business casual outfits, presumably going to work, with spiked-up punk hair.  And in general, I think there´s more body piercing, tattoo´s and the like here than what I remember in NYC.  I definitely don´t remember seeing machine-gun pants since I was in high school.

I don´t know think that´d pass muster (or mustard) in the States?  But the US is a more sober culture – a little more uptight in certain things and I think corporate culture is more uptight.  I was actually surprised when I learned that, depending on the role, Cerner would disallow long hair (as long as it´s tied back).  This was still a client-facing role.  One associate I worked with even had an eyebrow ring.

Maybe I´m getting old so I don´t run in the circles in the US where this sort of thing works.  But if punking out in Britain is ok by their corporate standards, then more power to personal style and freedom of expression.  It´s not as if folks are wearing tongue rings, are they?  d’oh.
